Get fit with the kids during Spring Break

by Malia Frey »

family runningSpring Break is not always a vacation for parents. Trying to keep kids entertained can be a challenge. But unscheduled days, along with warmer temperatures and snow-free parks, present a great opportunity to begin a spring fitness program with the family. Kids of all ages, from toddlers to teens, will benefit from parents who are not only active themselves, but who involve their children in exercise activities. Research confirms that these children are more likely to maintain a healthy body weight, do better in school, and exercise through adulthood.

To get started, try one of these indoor or outdoor workouts. For an additional challenge, set a goal to run a spring Get Your Rear in Gear 5K. Sign the family up online and let the kids form a team with neighborhood or school friends. Prizes for creative team costumes are given out on race day. Most races include not only a 5K distance for walkers and runners but also a Kid’s Fun Run for younger participants.
