More than 600 people gathered on a gorgeous Spring morning in Raleigh to raise awareness of colorectal cancer in North Carolina. The first annual Get Your Rear in Gear 5K run and walk was a runaway success, drawing 35 Teams and raising $50,000 for colon cancer awareness, screening and support projects in the Raleigh Area.

Presenting sponsor, Raleigh Endoscopy, partnered with a number of area medical facilities, including Rex HealthCare, Olympus, Digestive Healthcare, Wake Gastroenterology, Julianna Miller, MD, Cary Endoscopy to help get the word out to those touched by this cancer. That drew lots of Teams honoring those battling this cancer, including Dawn’s Rump Shakers, Live Sassy and Big Dog’s Fight. Big Dog’s Fight also was the highest fundraising team and lots of other fun awards were shared.

Colon Cancer Coalition President Kristin Tabor reminded the crowd to honor the person who inspired them to come to the event. Susan Falco, a survivor who drove all the way from Charlotte to participate, found the whole day so inspiring and wants to continue to help spread the word throughout the year that everyone needs to be screened for this cancer. Sponsors and participants alike are already looking forward to the 2010 event.
