A healthy alternative to Denny’s free Grand Slam breakfast
During yesterday’s Super Bowl, Denny’s restaurants announced that they are bringing back the free Grand Slam breakfast on Tuesday February 9th, 2010. Between 6 am and 2 pm anyone can come into the restaurant for a free Grand Slam combination. Sound like a great deal? Well, it is…until you see how many hours on the treadmill it might take to burn the calories in a typical meal. The Grand Slam Breakfast allows diners to choose four menu items from a long list of breakfast favorites. Listed below is the estimated calorie and fat content of a typical breakfast. Also listed is the length of time it would take a medium sized male exerciser to burn that number of calories walking, running on a treadmill or on the elliptical.
Sample Grand Slam breakfast
- 2 bacon strips: 208 calories, 18 g fat
- 2 fried eggs: 280 calories, 14g fat
- Hash browns: 340 calories, 18 g fat
- 2 pancakes: 520 calories, 14 g fat
Total: 1348 calories, 64 g fat
To burn that number of calories would require one of these activities:
- 4 hours of treadmill jogging
- 10.5 hours of walking
- 5.25 hours on an elliptical machine
For a healthier alternative, Denny’s offers some lower fat options. If you find yourself sold on the idea of a free breakfast, try this combination:
- 2 turkey bacon strips
- 2 hearty wheat pancakes
