American Cancer Society announces $371,000 for colon cancer in Minnesota state budget
The American Cancer Society announced today that Minnesota’s final Health and Human Services Budget, signed by Governor Pawlenty, includes $371,000 for colon cancer screening. In an open letter to supporters, ACS spokesperson Dr. Rebecca Thoman writes, “this is truly remarkable given the initial $6 billion deficit. Our success is a testament to you – volunteers, advocates, professionals who contacted lawmakers educating them about colon cancer and urging them to fund this small but important program. You wrote letters to the editor, made calls and e-mailed elected officials and your voice was heard.” Dr. Thoman goes on to ask all supporters of colon cancer legislation to send thanks to the legislators who pushed the budget. They include:
Sen. Linda Berglin
Rep. Karen Clark
Rep. Tom Huntley
Sen. Geoff Michel
Rep. Maria Ruud
Sen. Kathy Sheran
Rep. Paul Thissen
According to Dr. Thoman, “we will continue to monitor implementation of Minnesota’s Colorectal Cancer Prevention Act and watch as Gov. Pawlenty begins the unallotment process to balance the state’s budget.” Pawlenty plans to begin that process on Thursday when he will meet with members of his Cabinet. An e-mail account has been set up for citizens to comment on the unallotment. The e-mail is budgetideas@state.mn.us.
