WCCO-TV health reporter Dennis Douda tours the walk-though colon

WCCO-TV health reporter Dennis Douda takes a walk through a giant colon with gastroenterologist Brad Stone in this WCCO video. The giant colon is part of an educational campaign to encourage individuals aged 50 and over, or those with family histories, to get their routine colonoscopy. Dr. Stone explains the importance of the screening procedure.

“If you go and have a colonoscopy, your cancer risk is one tenth that of the general population. One tenth! So it cuts (your risk) by 90%.”

The giant colon displays polyps in various stages, from those that are pre-cancerous and easily removed to those that have progressed to advanced stages of cancer. As Dr. Stone points out, less than one percent of polyps have cancer in them. “We like to take them off before they develop cancer, ” he says.

The giant walk-through colon will be available for viewing at the Twin Cities Get Your Rear in Gear 5K Run/Walk on May 16, at Southdale Center in Edina, MN
