Last year, President Obama inspired the Office of Management and Budget to begin a pedometer challenge. According to some sources, a pedometer is the most cost effective way of increasing activity levels. Peter Orzag, Director of the OMB, explains that Obama’s goal was to spread wellness activity programs throughout the federal government. And, as Orzag explains, adding a community challenge inspires people to work harder.

When you measure something and have a competition surrounding it, it creates a strong incentive to do more of it and that’s what were trying to do at OMB.”

Orzag explains in the video below that employees in his office compete for prizes and other incentives.

To set up your own pedometer challenge, begin by gathering a few friends or coworkers. Then follow these steps to begin the contest.

  1. Purchase pedometers for each participant. Pedometers are inexpensive. Plan to spend five dollars or less for a decent model.
  2. Calibrate devices so that everyone begins at the same time.
  3. Take every opportunity to add steps into daily activity. Park further away from work or errands. Choose the stairs instead of taking the elevator. Turn a coffee break into a walking break.
  4. Compare numbers at the end of each day, each week and finally at the end of the month. Treat the winner to a healthy prize: exercise gear, spa treatment, or healthy cookbook.
