The health benefits of a high fiber diet

Whole grain bread is an excellent source of fiber
Dietary fiber found in fruits, vegetables and whole grain products has been linked to a decreased risk of colon cancer. In fact, although numerous studies have been conducted, the relationship between dietary fiber and colon cancer is still vague. Several studies have found that no link exists.
So why increase dietary fiber? There are many documentable benefits of including high fiber foods into a healthy diet. The Mayo Clinic lists many of the ways that fiber improves gastrointestinal and general health.
- Normalizes bowel movements.
- Helps maintain bowel integrity and health.
- Lowers blood cholesterol levels.
- Helps control blood sugar levels.
- Aids in weight loss.
Improving fiber intake may involve taking a fiber supplement, but many enjoyable foods that contain fiber also provide essential vitamins and minerals. Try to increase your daily intake of fruits and vegetables to meet the recommended daily allowance suggested by the Centers for Disease Control. Or increase your intake of other fiber rich foods including legumes and whole grain breads and cereals.
